At the White House, President Bush hailed the killing as "a severe blow to al-Qaida and it is a significant victory in the war on terror."Yeah! Just like when they got Saddam, or his kids, or when they voted on the constitution or when...come on, this is a propaganda victory not a real step forward. The Right will crow and pound their chests for a day or two and then Zarqawi will be forgotten.
Zarqawi was a monster who got what he deserved for his crimes. No tears will be shed for him here, but neither will they be crying about it in Iraq nor in Bin Laden's hideout wherever that may be. Zarqawi was a figurehead far more important to us than his role in this situation warranted.
I'll be happy to eat these words if there is any sign of progress after this, but I'm not too hopeful of that.
