Babies should not play possum

The Buddha decided to play possum for a good 36 hours, with very little movement or activity. Highly noticeable after three weeks straight of movement so purposeful and abrupt that strangers would stare at my stomach, watching body parts flail through the skin like a horror show.

She finally upset me enough with her non-activity that I called the doctor to set up an emergency appointment for a checkup this morning. I sat on hold for 15 minutes as they tried to rearrange my doctor's schedule to get me in today.

Low and Behold, during that 15 minutes she awoke, performed 6 kicks, one roll and a classic elbow swipe.

The child is already an attention-monger, playing games to get extra love from her panicked parents. That, or she's already working on her sinister plans to make her mommy look like a nutjob, the little evil genius.

Maybe I should start laying the fish oil pills before this gets out of hand.

30 weeks, 3 days today. 9 weeks 4 days to go.

Drinking (a little less) Liberally

Smartie and I were down in Des Moines this weekend for the National Drinking Liberally meeting. We had to ditch before the Harkin Steak Fry, since we needed to return a rental car and Smartie was taking off the next morning for a work retreat, but the sessions we did get to attend were great, as was the group as a whole:

Luckily, the guy from Redding has his head blocking my huge belly, so we don't get the incongruity that comes from a 7 month pregnant chick in a drinking liberally t shirt.

I love these yearly meetings because I find myself through summer getting burned out on the DL concept --especially this year being pregnant and traveling so much. Instead, we found ourselves re-energized by the planning, with Smartie and I passing notes throughout about events we want to organize and people we want to have visit.

Expect some good things to happen soon at the 331 Club. I've got a little over 10 weeks until the baby gets here, and lots to do.

God hates the Vikings

I'm with Kitna...

Kitna was knocked out of the game against Minnesota on Sunday with a concussion, only to return and lead the Lions to an overtime win over the Vikings.

"I've never felt anything like that, and for it to clear up and go right back to as normal as I can be, is nothing short of a miracle," Kitna said Monday. "I just definitely feel the hand of God. That's all it was. You can't explain it.

"I have no headaches, no symptoms, no lingering effects. But that was the worst my head has ever felt, and the worse my memory was in the second quarter. Yet, after halftime there was nothing."

Now if God could just black out the next game so we aren't tempted to watch it, it's all good.

Exactly

And, yes, one of the ads does start with the phrase, "It's no time for politics." God forbid that someone would politicize something as sacred as 9/11.

Tonight we get milkshakes

after 16 hours of fasting and 3 hours of blood drawing, I have passed my second screening at every level. The one hour test was a false fail, they've decided, and I'm healthy as a horse.

Which is good, cause without eating all day, I could really dig a chocolate milkshake.

Not so fast

So this morning, while scheduling my new three-hour-4-blood-draws-long gestational diabetes test for tomorrow, I learned that I was not supposed to have fasted before my hour test.

Oops.

On the bright side, it shouldn't be a problem passing my long test.

But I still have to take the long one, so not happy.

?

If someone would like to explain to me how I can fail my gestational diabetes test while at the same time not gaining weight, I'd love to hear it....

Sometimes a puffy foot is just a puffy foot

A checkup yesterday confirms that there is absolutely nothing wrong. I didn't quite make my goal weight for the month, but an ultrasound shows the little one is long and big, a regular porker, so she's apparently going full parasite on me and taking as much vitamins and calories as she needs and giving me the leftovers. Selfish from the start, I see...

Drank some sugar punch and had my blood taken...badly. I now have a three inch bruise and find my arm too sore to move much. But I suppose it that's the worst thing to happen yesterday, I'm pretty lucky.

Today I find myself slightly discombobulated. I'm not heading to Michigan for the final training with rest of the team, as we've decided I'm too pregnant to fly anymore (I had decided earlier to cut myself off once I hit the third trimester due to the fatigue and the foot swelling). So as much as I love the idea of a weekend with no work or travel (the first in a month, I think) I feel a little at a loss. I got to meet everyone in interviews, but this time I don't get to see everyone gathered as a team, which is usually my favorite part.

Instead, I will be here, picking some paint for the nursery, looking at furniture, catching up on sleep while I still can.

I've never been very good at relaxing.

Now is the time of puffy feet

Smartie and I had a whirlwind trip back to Omaha. We got to see lots of family and friends, got many generous gifts, and had a wonderful barbecue.

Sadly, either because of the heat or the 14 hours in a car (yes, it now takes officially an hour longer to get to Omaha than it used to thanks to a baby on the bladder) I now have an amazing case of puffy feet.

If anyone has a good idea of how I can work on the computer while flat on my side and feet up in the air, I would be happy to hear it.

Tomorrow is the 28 week checkup and a date with a big glass of syrup -- the gestational diabetes test. I also can feel the end approaching. From here on out I'm over the 4 week appointments and now into the 2 week visits.

Tonight I eat ice cream in the hopes of getting that extra two pounds I'm still short for the month. Between the ice cream tonight and the syrup tomorrow, I assume I'm in for a whole lot of internal kicking for the next 24 hours.
