Today was the well baby 4 month checkup. Munchie took this round of shots like a champ so far -- tears on the table went away after a bit of airplane, and we drove around for a half an hour after the appointment so she could sleep off the worst of it. So far the rest of the day has been eating and sleeping, with a walk around the park thrown in. Fussy, but not quite as inconsolable as last time
We went in with a ton of questions, got a lot of answers. Most of them not exactly what we wanted to hear. We asked about putting the baby on the handlebars of the bike (in a SEAT, of course), and he looked at us like we talked about sacrificing puppies. He said bike trailer only, and only after 6 months old. Swimming is good whenever, although it should be only with us holding her, as she's too young for any sort of flotation devices. No sunlight, no sunscreen, just floppy hats and light cottons, which could be a bit of a pain because Munchie LOVES her new daily walks (more about that in another post), and I don't know how he excepts her to hang out in the neighborhood kiddie pool that way, but I guess we'll cross that bridge later.
On the health front, turns out she has a mild case of
baby eczema, which explains why her forhead is so dry, the little chapped patch on her cheek, and why her ankles have always been really dry (one cracked one day, too). We need to pick up some cream and keep her in mittens at night until that goes away. Also, she is NOT getting molars, she actually has
Epstein's Pearls, and they should go away on their own.
She is now officially 25 1/2 inches long, and 13lbs 12oz (yes, that is two ounces lighter than when we went in two weeks ago, but they weighed her in full clothes and diaper, where as my regular doc does totally naked baby). That puts her in the 90% for height, and 50% for weight among girls her age. That also makes her a beanpole who doesn't fit into her clothes because she's too long for 3-6 month sleepers but the older you go in clothes, the more they adjust in the waist instead of the length. Luckily, spring and summer is coming, so we can start giving her more onesies and bottom combos. Onesies are less bulky in the middle, and if you buy older girl pants they tend to be elastic and a better fit. As for her sleepers, I may just cut the feet off the bottoms and let her wear them a few months more until they get too warm.
I was hoping that we'd be given the green light to do solids, but the doctor thinks we should wait another few weeks until she's closer to 5 months before we start giving her cereal by bowl. Since she's a bit disproportionate, he'd like her to keep on all formula since the calories are so much more bulky, and he's worried that the time spent spoonfeeding with less caloric cereal would slow down her gain. He did recommend adding some cereal to her bottle both to add some extra bulk and get her used to the taste. And yes, that is the exact opposite of everything they told me to do in the parenting books, but then again, what hasn't been so far?

But for today -- nothing but snuggles, naps, regular food, and maybe another walk. Fully clothed. Under a canopy. With a big floppy bonnet. Just like the doctor ordered.
You know...if she ever wakes up again.
